Glycolic Acid and AHA's

Glycolic Acid is the most popular of the group of AHA's, or alphahydroxy acids, which help to smooth the skin by accelerating the exfoliation of dead surface cells. Regular use results in smoother skin with fewer sun spots and wrinkles. Glycolic acid shows up in moisturizers, cleansers, acne medications, and even sunscreens. While glycolic acid is effective for treating fine wrinkles and variations in skin color, it’s important to remember that, since it is an acid, it has the potential to irritate your skin, and may cause some tingling or redness depending on its strength and your skin’s sensitivity. Still, most people should be able to use it at some concentration. If you’ve never used it before, it’s best to start at the lowest percentage available (which can be diluted, if necessary, by mixing it with moisturizer) for six weeks or so. After that, if you’re pleased with the results and are experiencing no irritation, you can move to a higher percentage.
